Stack cashback on every grocery trip
Cashback apps are the silent partner of any serious coupon strategy โ they stack on top of every other discount, including manufacturer coupons, store loyalty offers, and credit-card rewards. The result is an additional 8โ12% returned in cash for about five minutes of effort per shopping trip. Below are the platforms we actually use ourselves.
Ibotta
The largest grocery rebate marketplace in the U.S. Ibotta lists hundreds of weekly offers across every major chain โ typically $0.25 to $5 per item โ and pays out via PayPal, Venmo, or gift card once your balance crosses $20. Best for households that already have a list before they shop; the highest-return strategy is to check Ibotta the night before your trip and buy only items with active rebates.
Fetch Rewards
Fetch is the simplest of the cashback apps โ snap a photo of any grocery receipt and earn points across every purchase, with bonus points on featured brands. Points convert to gift cards starting at $3. Best for households that don't want to plan ahead; Fetch returns smaller per-item value than Ibotta but works on every receipt.
Checkout 51
A more curated rebate marketplace with strong dairy, produce, and household-cleaning coverage. Cash out via paper check or PayPal at $20. Particularly strong for households shopping at Walmart, Target, and Kroger.
Upside
Originally built for gas station rebates, Upside has expanded into grocery and convenience-store cashback with strong offers at supermarket-affiliated fuel centers (Kroger Fuel, Costco Gas). Cashback typically 5โ25ยข per gallon plus 1โ4% on grocery purchases at participating chains.
Rakuten
Rakuten primarily covers online ordering โ including grocery delivery from Instacart, Amazon Fresh, and most chain-branded curbside pickup orders. Cashback ranges from 1% to 10% depending on the retailer and current promotion. Combine Rakuten with chain loyalty for double-digit returns on delivery orders.
